Byrne got hooked to silent films when he saw Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. Bryne is the Board President of San Francisco Silent Film Festival and is a film restorer. He has worked on restoring silent films including the 1916 Sherlock Holmes film starring Willaim Gillette.
